The American Society of the River Plate (ASRP) was founded
as a non-profit organization in Buenos Aires on Thanksgiving
Day in November of 1905 by a group of North Americans living
in Argentina. These individuals would gather annually on holidays
and other special occasions as a way of bringing together the
international community in Buenos Aires, and to accomplish
the founding mission of promoting relations between the United
States and Argentina.
In 1921 the Society, composed of mostly ex-patriats, commenced
its fundraising efforts as a method of giving back to the community
through donations to various non-profit organizations in Argentina.
Grants and donations given by the ASRP through the decades
cover a wide range of organization including those who help
the blind, the handicapped, orphaned children, elderly citizens
and educational institutions to name just a few (see GRANTS
for more information).
For the past 104 years, the Society has been organizing events
which allow Americans, Argentines and individuals of several
nationalities to get together and promote cultural understanding,
business ties and lasting friendships. Currently, our membership
base has a wide range of individuals of all ages including
leaders from the international business community, American
and Argentine families, students studying abroad in Argentina,
and many more. There is a 16-member Board of Directors composed
of volunteers from the business, entertainment and educational
community that carries out the operations of the ASRP. For
several decades, the Ambassador of the United States of America
to Argentina has been our Honorary President and serves as
head of the Advisory Board, which oversees and directs the
actions of the Board of Directors.
The ASRP is currently on the brink of many exciting challenges
and opportunities for growth. 2005 was the most successful
fundraising year in ASRP history as it celebrated it's 100 years. There was overwhelming support from the international
community in Buenos Aires as well as abroad.
We invite you to become a member of the American Society of
the River Plate and help us promote international friendships
while making a positive contribution to the Argentine community.
Vilma Martinez
Honorary President of
